Introduction: Philip Coupland

This website is created to share the historical research and writing of Philip Coupland.  Dr Coupland was awarded his Ph.D. by the University of Warwick in 2000; his thesis was entitled ‘Voices from Nowhere: Utopianism in British Political Culture, 1929-1945’. He also holds degrees from the Universities of Leicester and Birmingham. After working as a teaching fellow at Warwick he became the researcher for the UK section of the European Commission funded project ‘The Churches and European Integration’ and was based in the Department of History at the University of Glasgow. His first book was based on research conducted for this project and is entitled Britannia, Europa and Christendom: British Christians and European Integration. It was published by Palgrave Macmillan in  2006. In 2009 he was made a Fellow of the George Bell Institute, at the University of Chichester.

Dr. Coupland has also written a series of articles and chapters on the British Union of Fascists. A number of these are reproduced here, along with a bibliography of recent research on the topic. The BUF, founded by Sir Oswald Mosley in 1932, was the most significant British fascist movement of the twentieth century and continues to be a popular subject for historians, novelists and film makers.

Philip Coupland continues to be interested in and write about the history of British fascism, wartime reconstruction, utopianism and European integration. He is happy to correspond with anyone sharing similar historical interests although he cannot promise to provide sufficient material to meet the demands of an essay crisis.
